The Victory Column in the Tiergarten

Berlin’s golden Victory rises above the Großer Stern, with an internal staircase leading to a classic view over the park.

Victory Column at a glanceThe column celebrates Prussian victories of the nineteenth century and is now best known as a panoramic landmark.

Designed by Heinrich Strack and inaugurated in 1873, it commemorates Prussian victories over Denmark, Austria and France. The Nazis moved it from the Reichstag area to the Großer Stern in 1938–39.

Friedrich Drake’s gilded Victory is affectionately known as Goldelse. Reliefs and mosaics at the base express the celebratory language of Prussia and the German Empire.

A narrow spiral stair of 285 steps reaches the viewing platform. There is no lift, but the view over the Tiergarten and Straße des 17. Juni rewards the climb.
