Almost destroyed in the Second World War, it was rebuilt by 1963. A major renovation from 2020 to November 2024 recast the circular interior around a central altar.

The crypt commemorates Bernhard Lichtenberg, a priest who publicly prayed for persecuted Jews. Combine the cathedral with Bebelplatz, the State Opera and Unter den Linden.
