Brandenburg Gate: from border to unity

Berlin’s best-known monument, once isolated beside the Wall and now a national symbol of peace and reunification.

Brandenburg Gate at a glanceThe gate closes Unter den Linden and opens onto the Tiergarten. Visit it with the Reichstag and Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.

Carl Gotthard Langhans built the gate between 1788 and 1791, drawing on the Propylaea of Athens. Johann Gottfried Schadow’s Quadriga crowns it.

Napoleon took the Quadriga to Paris in 1806. The gate later survived war and then stood inaccessible within the Berlin Wall’s security zone from 1961.

Ronald Reagan delivered his 1987 appeal to open the Wall here. Since 1989 the gate has become a symbol of peace and unity; early morning and blue hour are calmer.
