Getting to know Roseto

From Montepagano to the Lido delle Rose

Roseto degli Abruzzi grew between the Adriatic and the hills. Its oldest roots are in Montepagano; the coastal settlement expanded after the railway arrived in 1863 and gradually became one of the best-known seaside towns on the Teramo coast.

Until 1887 the settlement was called Le Quote, then Rosburgo. The present name dates from 1927. These changes mirror the passage from fishing and agricultural community to tourism town without erasing the hill landscape behind it.

The nickname Lido delle Rose recalls the roses and oleanders that once framed streets, balconies and gardens. The beach and promenade remain central, but Roseto also means basketball, the Borsacchio reserve, Montepagano’s lanes and the Gran Sasso appearing behind the coast on clear days.

I have always read Roseto through this contrast: a lively, practical seaside town and, only a few kilometres away, quiet hills where vineyards and olive groves preserve an older pace.
