Red Tsingy: what to see, photos and map

Red Tsingy at a glanceRed, ochre and violet laterite pinnacles reshaped by rain in a small canyon near the Irodo River.

Allow 1–2 hours and use colour and fragility as the thread of the visit; local conditions still decide the exact pace.

Red Tsingy

The Red Tsingy are laterite, sandstone and marl rather than Ankarana’s hard limestone. Their brick-red, orange and violet towers rise inside a small canyon.

Each rainy season cuts new channels, creates pinnacles and collapses others. Visitors must stay on paths and never touch the formations: one step can destroy what water shaped over years.

Low morning or afternoon light makes the colours glow. Midday brings fierce heat and little shade, while the access track may require a real 4WD after rain.
