Matala: caves, sea and counterculture history

A compact bay framed by caves, with easy village life and a walking route towards a wilder coast.

Matala at a glanceThe cliff caves are the landmark, but the pleasure comes from the whole bay: a walkable village, sheltered beach and route to Red Beach.

The caves were reused across different periods and later became associated with travellers and 1960s counterculture.

Matala beach and cliff caves

The village is compact. The best views appear from the edges rather than the centre of the beach.

The Red Beach path is steep and exposed. Treat it as a short hike, not an extension of the promenade.
