Sugarloaf Mountain: what to see, photos and how to get there

Sugarloaf Mountain at a glanceThe Sugarloaf cable car climbs in two stages above Urca and opens one of Rio’s most recognisable panoramas between bay, ocean and Corcovado.

Sugarloaf is Rio’s other great natural terrace. The cable car leaves Praia Vermelha, reaches Morro da Urca and then crosses open space towards the summit.

The two-stage ascent allows time on Morro da Urca, where short trails and viewpoints face Botafogo. Those who prefer can reach this first level via the Costão trail, after considering heat, ground conditions and safety.

From the summit you can read Copacabana, Corcovado, downtown and Guanabara Bay. My favourite time is late afternoon: climb before sunset and remain as city lights appear, completely changing the scene.

The cable-car silhouette entered cinema history, from Moonraker onwards. Yet the visit needs no special effects: granite, sea and the improbable way Rio arranges itself around the peak are enough.

Conditions, opening times and local transport can change, so verify the practical details through the official source before setting out.

Allow enough time to observe changes of light, scale and everyday detail: they often explain the place better than a hurried sequence of landmarks.
