This cycle path follows the Pineto coast on an almost entirely flat route. The distance from the Cerrano Tower area to the Vomano bridge is about 10 km. It is ideal for an unhurried bicycle ride, a trip at sunset or a stage of a longer journey along the Adriatic Cycle Route.

The beauty of this route lies in its changing landscape: the pine grove and Cerrano Tower in the south, the open spaces of Scerne and the hills further north, and finally the bridge over the River Vomano.

The route at a glance
  • About 9.9 km one way; roughly 20 km out and back.
  • Almost entirely flat, with short bridge approaches.
  • South to north: Cerrano Tower, Pineto, Scerne and the Vomano bridge.

The southern section: pine grove, Adriatic and Cerrano Tower

Setting off from Cerrano Tower and heading north gives you one of the most characteristic views of the Teramo coast. The pine grove accompanies the ride, filtering sunlight through its trunks, while the sea stays close by. The tower overlooking the beach is a natural landmark for the start or finish of the outing.

This is the most sheltered and atmospheric stretch, where the green of the pine grove meets the blue Adriatic. Ride slowly and enjoy the feeling of being surrounded by nature, just a few minutes from central Pineto.

The cycle path beside the tower’s garden opened on 2 June 2025. It completes this stretch of the ride through the protected coastal landscape. You can explore the tower and pine grove at your own pace.

North towards Scerne, between the sea and the hills

Towards Scerne the landscape becomes more open and wild. The sea remains on one side, while views of the Abruzzo hills open out on the other. This is an especially enjoyable section for anyone who loves wide spaces, sea breezes and a greater sense of freedom.

For anyone who enjoys cycling, running or a quiet walk, I recommend this northern stretch towards Scerne. Beyond the campsite area, the path follows the sea through an open landscape with lovely views of the hills behind the Adriatic coast.

The cycle and pedestrian connection from the northern end of Scerne’s seafront to the Vomano bridge was completed and opened in November 2024, improving the link to the bridge and the municipality of Roseto degli Abruzzi.

Along the way

The coastal path lets you enjoy the scenery without major climbs. Some stretches are shared with pedestrians: keep your speed down and watch for walkers, children and other cyclists. Use the cycle lane wherever pedestrian and cycle routes are separate.

The Vomano bridge and the connection to Roseto

Reaching the cycle and pedestrian bridge over the River Vomano is one of the highlights of the ride. It connects Scerne di Pineto with Roseto degli Abruzzi, allowing you to cross the river without using the SS16 main road. Opened on 26 November 2022, the bridge was an important step towards a continuous coastal cycle route.

After crossing the Vomano, you can continue onto Roseto’s cycle network. The outing can become a longer coastal ride: choose how far you want to go before turning back.

My tip: reach the bridge after sunset

The bridge is worth seeing after dark too.

The lighting along the structure creates an atmospheric crossing, as the evening photograph shows. It makes a lovely destination for an evening ride and a place to stop for a few minutes before continuing towards Roseto or heading back.

An evening ride along the coast

An evening outing is another lovely way to enjoy this route: you could leave Pineto, cycle to Roseto for a drink or dinner and ride back after sunset. It is a pleasant way to leave the car behind and experience the seafront at a different pace. Use working front and rear bicycle lights and do not rely on uninterrupted public lighting along the whole route.
